Condemned to wander, it is accused of espionage by its critics. But it can no longer return to Russia either.On board the Shtandart, Vladimir Martus has spent his life trying to escape the woes of his century, sailing his anachronistic ship with a utopia he wanted to keep outside of the world. Picture him with long white hair blowing in the wind, pirate-like, standing on the bow of his yellow and black three-masted ship, an exact replica of Tsar Peter the Great's flagship. Hit by European sanctions against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, imposed in 2022 and renewed in 2024, the ship, which hails from Saint Petersburg, has become a persona non grata at European docks. For two years, it has sailed from port to port, in many cases denied entry.This summer, it was banned from the maritime festivals in Brest. The local authorities just authorized a quick resupply at Quiberon after denying it docking. His opponents accuse him of espionage, while Vladimir Martus claims to be a dissident. A 17th-century ship tossed around by 21st-century geopolitics, trapped at sea—this is one of the strange spatio-temporal rifts created by war.The dilemma arose off Corfu, Greece, in February 2022. Russia invaded Ukraine, and the European ports that were supposed to welcome the ship for the summer season began canceling one after another. However, the ship is operated by volunteers who board during these stopovers, and it is mainly funded through its participation in various maritime events. What to do? Vladimir Martus hesitated: sail towards Turkey, closer to Vladimir Putin? Head for France or Spain, where he was no longer welcome? At sea, he hesitated, and provisions dwindled.
