Picture him with long white hair blowing in the wind, pirate-like, standing on the bow of his yellow and black three-masted ship, an exact replica of Tsar Peter the Great's flagship. Hit by European sanctions against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, imposed in 2022 and renewed in 2024, the ship, which hails from Saint Petersburg, has become a persona non grata at European docks. For two years, it has sailed from port to port, in many cases denied entry.This summer, it was banned from the maritime festivals in Brest. The local authorities just authorized a quick resupply at Quiberon after denying it docking. His opponents accuse him of espionage, while Vladimir Martus claims to be a dissident. A 17th-century ship tossed around by 21st-century geopolitics, trapped at sea—this is one of the strange spatio-temporal rifts created by war.The dilemma arose off Corfu, Greece, in February 2022. Russia invaded Ukraine, and the European ports that were supposed to welcome the ship for the summer season began canceling one after another.
