Tasks will include simple but important work: washing and painting the ship’s sides, and getting everything in order before the next voyage. As usual, watches will also include cooking, cleaning the lower decks, and washing the deck (read more about life on board: https://shtandart.eu/about-shtandart/life-on-board/).

The volunteer contribution for food is €15 per day.

As always, repair work is not only a great way to help the ship but also to earn days at sea — 3 days of repairs = 1 day of sailing.

Good sailing is the complete dialectical opposite of comfortable conditions.
If you have good sail performance, there will be heeling. I’m not particularly bothered by the fact that things go flying or that you get thrown out of your bunk. With heel comes water.
We don’t say “it’s leaking” or “it’s flooding” — such impersonal phrases diminish the experience.
We say, “water comes”, acknowledging the inalienable right of water to appear whenever it pleases. It simply comes.

If everything is dry and stable, it means there’s no wind, no sails — just dreary motoring.

It is very, very satisfying to sail with a 15-degree heel at 9 knots.
It’s pure joy.
Well, sort of. It’s pure joy if you’re a young volunteer at the helm, given a simple task — keep the speed up.
But if you’re the one who knows that on this side lies a wind shadow and on the other, a heel that will collapse the sails — and that you must avoid both, and also make sure the young helmsmen avoid them too — then the joy becomes… a little less unlimited.
As Ecclesiastes said: “With much wisdom comes much sorrow.”

Just before our departure from La Rochelle, we took part in a short film by the production company Alexandra Celestin— a pilot project created for Disney. In the storyline, the ship’s crew is made up of mermaids — and, as often happens, the plot soon turns into a pirate adventure.

The frigate Shtandart is not a movie set piece, but a living reconstruction of an authentic 18th-century ship. Its historical accuracy, full sailing rig, and immersive atmosphere make it a unique filming location, ideal for:

• historical dramas and reconstructions
• adventure and pirate films
• fantasy projects where the spirit of maritime romance is essential

Shtandart has already attracted the attention of filmmakers many times, and its scale and authenticity provide cinematic images that no CGI can replace.

On screen, it comes alive — transforming into a pirate vessel, a royal frigate, or a mysterious ghost ship.

On September 17, Shtandart set sail from La Rochelle and took a course to the south!
Our route will take us through Tangier (Morocco), Bizerte (Tunisia), and Antalya (Turkey).

There are 22 people on board from 9 different countries. Everything is shipshape: we conduct a safety briefing, practiced bracing the yards ashore, hoisted the sails — and now we’re ready for a true sea adventure!

As always during the voyage, everyone becomes a full member of the crew, regardless of age or experience. All you need is the desire — we’ll teach you everything along the way!

On September 4, 1999, Shtandart touched the water for the first time.

Tens of thousands of people watched its launch — live, from the shore.

Many years have passed since then, and today Shtandart is not just a ship, but a whole world. It is a living community of people: those who built the frigate, repaired it, sailed it and supported the project all these years.

Recently, the Court of the European Union refused to even consider the plea of the captain and builder of the sailing ship Shtandart — a plea to spare this historic vessel from the weight of European sanctions. The Court’s reasoning was not about the ship itself, but purely procedural: it declared the complaint “inadmissible” and stated it had no authority to hear the case. But behind those sterile legal formulas lives another reality — the reality of a wooden ship breathing with history, and a crew of volunteers who, for over a year now, have been stranded at sea, unable to enter a welcoming harbor.

Shtandart is no ordinary vessel. She is a painstakingly crafted reconstruction of an 18th-century frigate, built with love and with respect for maritime traditions. For more than 25 years, she has carried an international crew across oceans, joining regattas, festivals, and — most importantly — opening her deck to young people from many nations. Onboard, they learn not only how to set sails or tie knots, but how to listen, to trust, and to live in harmony with one another.

This ship does not trade in oil. She does not bear arms. She does not participate in wars. Her mission is far simpler and far more precious: to teach, to unite, to inspire.

Thousands of young men and women from across the world have passed through the “school of life” on her deck. They learned to work as one, to overcome fear, to see one another not as strangers but as fellow sailors. Why then must the Shtandart be punished? Is it merely because of the passport of her builders? Or because bureaucracy has no patience to distinguish the innocent from the guilty?

When Europe’s sanctions closed the ports to the Shtandart, the ship itself did not suffer — people did. The captain, the crew, the volunteers, the students who dreamed of learning the sea — all of them have been left adrift, their hopes anchored in uncertainty.

“We are not a flag. We are sails. We are a crew. We are about peace,” the sailors of the Shtandart say.

Yes, she was built in Saint Petersburg. But long ago, the Shtandart became something greater than a national vessel: she became a floating home without borders, where the only citizenship that matters is courage, teamwork, and an open heart.

There is no justification for punishing this ship. She threatens no one. What she carries in her sails is not division or fear — but friendship, love, and the spirit of peace itself.

Sailing Schedule Until October

The Shtandart’s autumn passages combine open-sea voyages with historic coastal routes:

• 05–11 September — La Rochelle – La Rochelle : A circular voyage to get acquainted with the ship and prepare for longer journeys.
• 17–27 September — La Rochelle – Tangier (Morocco): An Atlantic passage across the Bay of Biscay and through Gibraltar — a classic of long-distance sailing.
• 27 September – 5 October — Tangier (Morocco) – Bizerte (Tunisia): Following the ancient seafarers’ routes along the North African coast.
• 5–15 October — Bizerte (Tunisia) – Antalya (Turkey) : A vibrant Eastern Mediterranean itinerary with warm seas and rich culture.
• 27 September – 15 October — Tangier (Morocco) – Antalya (Turkey): A full Mediterranean crossing for those who want to truly disconnect from land and immerse themselves in life at sea.

November Adventure: The Turkish Riviera

This year’s program continues into late autumn with a special voyage along Turkey’s southern coast:

• Departure & Arrival: Alanya
• Boarding: 8 November, 17:00
• Arrival: 19 November, 06:00

This journey offers 12 days at sea aboard the Shtandart. The opportunity to explore the timeless beauty of the Mediterranean in its quieter season — when the air is crisp, the sea calm, and the summer crowds long gone.
