Tasks will include simple but important work: washing and painting the ship’s sides, and getting everything in order before the next voyage. As usual, watches will also include cooking, cleaning the lower decks, and washing the deck (read more about life on board: https://shtandart.eu/about-shtandart/life-on-board/).

The volunteer contribution for food is €15 per day.

As always, repair work is not only a great way to help the ship but also to earn days at sea — 3 days of repairs = 1 day of sailing.

Хороший сейлинг является полной диалектический противоположностью комфортным условиям. Если у вас хороший парусный ход, то появляется крен. Меня не очень беспокоит то, что на крене все улетает или тебя выбрасывает с койки. С креном приходит вода. Мы не говорим “заливает” или “течет”, такое безличное обесценивание процесса. Мы говорим “water comes”, признавая неотъемлимое право воды приходить, когда ей будет угодно. Она просто приходит.

Если же у вас все ровно и сухо, это значит, никакого ветра, никаких парусов нет, унылое моторение - ну и зачем вы здесь?

Это чистое удовольствие. .
Ну хотя тут как. Чистое оно - когда ты юный волонтер-рулевой, котором дали задачу держать скорость.
Когда ты знаешь, что с этой стороны тебя ждёт потеря ветра, а с этой крен, после которого положит паруса, и тебе надо избегать, и чтобы юные рулевые тоже избегали, удовольствие уже несколько… не такой безграничное. Как говорил Экклезиаст, "многие знания, многие печали".

Накануне нашего отплытия из Ла-Рошели мы поучаствовали в съёмках короткометражного фильма компании Alexandra Celestin — пилотного проекта, созданного для Disney. По сюжету, команда корабля состоит из русалок — и, как это часто бывает, история вскоре превращается в пиратское приключение.

"Штандарт" — это не декорация для кино, а живая реконструкция подлинного корабля XVIII века. Его историческая достоверность, полностью реальный и рабочий рангоут и такелаж, а главное - особая атмосфера - делают фрегат уникальной киносъёмочной площадкой, идеально подходящей:

On September 17, Shtandart set sail from La Rochelle and took a course to the south!
Our route will take us through Tangier (Morocco), Bizerte (Tunisia), and Antalya (Turkey).

There are 22 people on board from 9 different countries. Everything is shipshape: we conduct a safety briefing, practiced bracing the yards ashore, hoisted the sails — and now we’re ready for a true sea adventure!

As always during the voyage, everyone becomes a full member of the crew, regardless of age or experience. All you need is the desire — we’ll teach you everything along the way!

Many years have passed since then, and today Shtandart is not just a ship, but a whole world. It is a living community of people: those who built the frigate, repaired it, sailed it and supported the project all these years.

Recently, the Court of the European Union refused to even consider the plea of the captain and builder of the sailing ship Shtandart — a plea to spare this historic vessel from the weight of European sanctions. The Court’s reasoning was not about the ship itself, but purely procedural: it declared the complaint “inadmissible” and stated it had no authority to hear the case. But behind those sterile legal formulas lives another reality — the reality of a wooden ship breathing with history, and a crew of volunteers who, for over a year now, have been stranded at sea, unable to enter a welcoming harbor.

Shtandart is no ordinary vessel. She is a painstakingly crafted reconstruction of an 18th-century frigate, built with love and with respect for maritime traditions. For more than 25 years, she has carried an international crew across oceans, joining regattas, festivals, and — most importantly — opening her deck to young people from many nations. Onboard, they learn not only how to set sails or tie knots, but how to listen, to trust, and to live in harmony with one another.

This ship does not trade in oil. She does not bear arms. She does not participate in wars. Her mission is far simpler and far more precious: to teach, to unite, to inspire.

Thousands of young men and women from across the world have passed through the “school of life” on her deck. They learned to work as one, to overcome fear, to see one another not as strangers but as fellow sailors. Why then must the Shtandart be punished? Is it merely because of the passport of her builders? Or because bureaucracy has no patience to distinguish the innocent from the guilty?

When Europe’s sanctions closed the ports to the Shtandart, the ship itself did not suffer — people did. The captain, the crew, the volunteers, the students who dreamed of learning the sea — all of them have been left adrift, their hopes anchored in uncertainty.

“We are not a flag. We are sails. We are a crew. We are about peace,” the sailors of the Shtandart say.

Yes, she was built in Saint Petersburg. But long ago, the Shtandart became something greater than a national vessel: she became a floating home without borders, where the only citizenship that matters is courage, teamwork, and an open heart.

There is no justification for punishing this ship. She threatens no one. What she carries in her sails is not division or fear — but friendship, love, and the spirit of peace itself.

Though barred from participating officially in the Tall Ships Race due to the ship’s historical roots in St. Petersburg, the Shtandart continues her steadfast journey—both literal and symbolic—as a living tribute to cooperation, peace, and maritime heritage.

Despite being prohibited from docking at the Port of Aberdeen by local port authorities, Shtandart anchored in the small harbor of Buckie, approximately 100 kilometers north. Undeterred, several of her 25 international crew members made their way by public transport to Aberdeen to take part in the race festivities. Although excluded from the official event and its facilities, the crew immersed themselves in the spirit of unity and camaraderie the Tall Ships Races were built to celebrate.

“We may not have had a berth in Aberdeen, but we found anchorage in the hearts of the people,” said Captain Vladimir Martus, who has helmed the Shtandart through many challenges. “The crew’s resilience is matched only by the kindness of those who welcomed us.”

Crew members marched proudly in the parade, and one sailor—an accomplished musician—delivered impromptu organ recitals at St. Andrew’s Cathedral.

“Their music lifted the spirits of many. It was a joy to open our doors to such brave and talented young people,” said Father Isaac Poobalan, Provost of St. Andrew’s.
“Though they arrived without fanfare, they brought something sacred—an unshaken belief in peace and unity.”

The warmth extended far beyond the cathedral. Local volunteers embraced the Shtandart crew as their own.

“We don’t need a flag to tell us who’s welcome here,” said Deacon Doug Duncan port chaplain of the Stella Maris Seafarers’ Organization. “These are sailors. They belong.”

“I just did a bit of laundry for one of them this morning,” shared Ann Ryans, a volunteer from Aberdeen Seafarers Organization. “He’s an amazing young man. I feel blessed to have met him, a true ambassador for his country. It felt like I was helping a neighbor. They’re not strangers—they’re family.”

With limited accommodations, crew members found rest wherever they could. Some shared tight hotel spaces, while others slept at the Breakneck Comedy Club, generously offered by the cathedral.

“There was fellowship, thoughtful discussion, and a shared sense of humanity,” added Poobalan. I was grateful we could offer accommodation—and it’s been heartening to hear how others in the community reached out with kindness and practical support.”

In a moving gesture, Poobalan journeyed to Buckie to bless the Shtandart and her crew at anchor. “It was a moment of solemn grace,” he said. “And tomorrow, I will bless all the ships from the lighthouse—including Shtandart. Because exclusion has no place in faith.”

The Shtandart’s diverse crew—representing 14 different nations—continues to demonstrate unity in action. They remain undeterred by politics and focused on their shared mission: fostering understanding through the living heritage of the sea.

“This ship is no menace to Europe,” said Captain Vladimir. “She is a floating symbol of cooperation, courage, and hope—a lighthouse in troubled waters.”
