We’re looking for volunteers to help with ship maintenance from November 2nd to 7th. The Shtandart will be docked near Alanya, Turkey.

Tasks will include simple but important work: washing and painting the ship’s sides, and getting everything in order before the next voyage. As usual, watches will also include cooking, cleaning the lower decks, and washing the deck (read more about life on board: https://shtandart.eu/about-shtandart/life-on-board/).

The volunteer contribution for food is €15 per day.

As always, repair work is not only a great way to help the ship but also to earn days at sea — 3 days of repairs = 1 day of sailing.

We look forward to receiving your applications at voyage@shtandart.eu.

We are sailing past the shores of Sicily and Greece, crossing the Ionian Sea. We have a steady strong wind, making 6–9 knots, waves 2–3 meters high, with heeling and water everywhere. The waves that sharply lift the ship, then crash with a twist and roll away into the distance, create a picturesque backdrop for our voyage — especially beautiful under the bright full moon. This is an ancient human sea; thousands of years ago, it was already navigated by Phoenician, Greek, and Roman ships. It was here that part of Odysseus’s journey took place.
I can’t stop imagining that we are not on an 18th-century frigate (a rather advanced seafaring vessel), but on an ancient trireme with a single square sail. How those waves must have tossed them around…

Good sailing is the complete dialectical opposite of comfortable conditions.
If you have good sail performance, there will be heeling. I’m not particularly bothered by the fact that things go flying or that you get thrown out of your bunk. With heel comes water.
We don’t say “it’s leaking” or “it’s flooding” — such impersonal phrases diminish the experience.
We say, “water comes”, acknowledging the inalienable right of water to appear whenever it pleases. It simply comes.

If everything is dry and stable, it means there’s no wind, no sails — just dreary motoring.

It is very, very satisfying to sail with a 15-degree heel at 9 knots.
It’s pure joy.
Well, sort of. It’s pure joy if you’re a young volunteer at the helm, given a simple task — keep the speed up.
But if you’re the one who knows that on this side lies a wind shadow and on the other, a heel that will collapse the sails — and that you must avoid both, and also make sure the young helmsmen avoid them too — then the joy becomes… a little less unlimited.
As Ecclesiastes said: “With much wisdom comes much sorrow.”

watch officer of the frigate Shtandart

Notes of the Secret Chancellery’s Courier is a Russian adventure-historical TV series created by writer and director Oleg Ryaskov.

Set in the early 18th century, in the turbulent years following the death of Peter the Great, the story plunges viewers into a world of court intrigue, espionage missions of the Secret Chancellery, encounters with pirates, and daring overseas voyages.

To bring this sweeping historical adventure to life, the filmmakers turned to authentic tall ships. All maritime scenes were filmed in Kronstadt and its surroundings, featuring the legendary frigate Shtandart — a full-scale replica of the vessel once sailed by Peter I himself. Alongside Shtandart, the brigantine Triumph and the schooner Espanola also took part in filming.

The inclusion of Shtandart added striking realism and grandeur to the production. Its authentic rigging, imposing silhouette, and historical detail allowed audiences to feel transported back to the 18th century, heightening the drama of sea battles and ocean journeys.

In Nova Zembla — a 2011 Dutch historical-drama directed by Reinout Oerlemans — the replica frigate Shtandart was used as a stand-in for the 16th-century Dutch ship De Windhond.

For the film, the Shtandart underwent cosmetic modifications to fit the period look: decorative carvings and bright colours were toned down or covered, and her decks were adapted when needed in order to match what a Dutch expedition vessel of 1596 might look like.

This usage of a real tall ship added authenticity to the sea-voyage and ship scenes, giving the arctic exploration more real texture and presence than would have been possible using only models or CGI. Nova Zembla also marked a significant technical achievement: it was the first Dutch feature film made in 3D.

The production of Michiel de Ruyter staged large-scale naval battles on the Markermeer and used several real tall ships for the sea sequences. The modern replica frigate Shtandart took part in those filming operations and appears among the authentic sailing vessels used to recreate 17th-century warships. Using working tall ships such as the Shtandart gave the film a tactile, cinematic realism that CGI alone could not supply.

In addition to the Shtandart, the production employed multiple replicas and model-works. Because sea battles combined practical ship footage with visual effects, some of the larger fleet shots are augmented in post-production; nevertheless, the presence of real ships on the Markermeer — including the Shtandart — was central to staging and filming the close-up seafaring action.

In the 2015 UK television film Peter & Wendy, the production team used the Shtandart, a modern replica of the 1703 frigate, to portray Captain Hook’s pirate ship. They located the Shtandart docked in Lübeck, Germany, on the Baltic coast, and then transported her to Swanage in Dorset, England, where scenes featuring pirates and the full ship setting were filmed.

The film is a retelling of Peter Pan, written by Adrian Hodges and directed by Diarmuid Lawrence, that mixes Barrie’s fantasy story with a modern-day story about a young girl Lucy who is awaiting heart surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The Shtandart adds authenticity to the seafaring fantasy elements, giving the pirate ship and Hook’s scenes a real presence rather than fully relying on CGI or mockups.

In 2016, the frigate Shtandart took part in the filming of 22 Ángeles, a Spanish historical television film directed by Miguel Bardem and written by Alicia Luna. The movie tells the story of the famous Balmis Expedition at the beginning of the 19th century, when a group of young boys accompanied Spanish doctors on a transatlantic voyage to deliver the smallpox vaccine to the New World.

For the maritime sequences, the production turned to the Shtandart, a faithful replica of Tsar Peter the Great’s flagship of 1703. With her wooden hull, full rigging, and authentic design, she convincingly recreated the look and atmosphere of an early 19th-century Spanish vessel. The use of a real working tall ship gave the film’s seafaring scenes a sense of realism and historical depth that would have been difficult to achieve with digital effects alone.

Through her appearance in 22 Ángeles, the Shtandart once again demonstrated her versatility as a sailing film set, bringing history to life on screen and connecting modern audiences with the age of sail.

La Fortuna is a Spanish-American adventure drama television miniseries directed by Alejandro Amenábar and starring Álvaro Mel, Ana Polvorosa, and Stanley Tucci.

A unique feature of the production was the use of real historical replica ships to bring authenticity to the maritime scenes. Two vessels took part in the filming: the French replica frigate Étoile du Roy and the Russian-built replica of the early 18th-century frigate Shtandart.

The Shtandart, an exact reconstruction of the first flagship of Tsar Peter the Great, is a fully operational sailing ship. With her wooden hull, tall masts, and period rigging, she provided an atmospheric and historically accurate setting for the naval sequences. Her participation added a strong sense of realism to the story, which blends history, adventure, and drama across both sides of the Atlantic.

Thanks to ships like the ShtandartLa Fortuna was able to capture the spirit of classic sea sailing while remaining visually authentic and true to the age of sail.
